Read, search and make sense of your Google Takeout.

A Takeout export is thousands of folders and JSON files that nothing can open. ViewTakeout reads it straight from your disk and gives you back a timeline you can browse, a history you can search and lists you can filter. No account, no server, no upload.

You asked for your data back. Google handed you a pile of files.

Folders, cryptic filenames and thousands of .json files holding the part that matters: real dates, albums, people, places and settings. ViewTakeout reads that layer and puts it back where you can see it.

Three steps. No upload anywhere.

1

Export and unzip

Request your data at Google Takeout, choose JSON where it asks, and unzip the download. If it came split, unzip every part into the same folder.

2

Choose the folder

Open a reader and pick the folder. Your browser asks permission for that one folder, and only that folder.

3

Browse and analyse

Everything is read from your disk. Search, filter, sort and open anything to see the metadata behind it.

The whole point

Your files never leave your computer.

ViewTakeout does not upload anything. It opens your export straight from your disk, the way a photo viewer on your computer does. Your browser asks which folder you want to open, and you decide.

It is like handing someone the key to one room in your house so they can look inside — not packing the boxes and mailing them away. You give access to one folder, and you can take it back whenever you want.

No server, no account

There is nothing to sign up for, because there is nothing stored online.

It works offline

Turn off your wifi and the readers keep working. That is the proof that nothing is traveling anywhere.

Your browser asks permission

Chrome shows a prompt asking whether to open that folder, and only that folder. It asks again every time you return.

You can take the access back

Click the padlock in Chrome's address bar to see which folder you allowed and remove it.

Read-only, always

The readers never write, move or rename anything. Your export stays exactly as Google delivered it.

The demonstration

Open a reader, disconnect from the internet, and keep browsing. If anything were being uploaded, none of it would work.

Offline works

One honest warning

Do not use it on a shared or public computer. The browser remembers the folder you allowed, so the next person on that machine could open the page and see your list.

Requirements, stated plainly

The readers open files straight from your disk using a browser feature that not every browser supports yet. Here is exactly what you need.

  • A desktop browser: Chrome, Edge or Opera.
  • Your export must be unzipped first.
  • For My Activity, choose JSON in Takeout. The HTML version cannot be read.
  • Firefox and Safari do not yet support the browser feature this relies on.
  • Not available on phones or tablets. Most people read about it on their phone and open it later on a computer.

Questions, answered honestly

Do you see my photos?

No. They are never sent anywhere — there is no server to send them to. The tool reads files directly from your disk inside your own browser.

Do I need an account?

No. There is nothing to sign up for, because nothing is stored online.

Is it free?

Yes. ViewTakeout is free to use.

Does it change or delete my files?

No. It only reads them. Your export stays exactly as it is.

Why does it ask for permission every time?

Browsers deliberately do not keep folder access permanently. One click restores it.

My export came in several ZIP files.

Unzip them all into the same folder so the photos and their metadata end up together.

How big an export can it handle?

Libraries with tens of thousands of photos work. Thumbnails load as you scroll, and the index is remembered so the second visit is instant.

Why doesn't it work in Firefox or Safari?

It relies on the File System Access API, which reads folders straight from your disk. Only Chrome, Edge and Opera support it today.

Where can I get my Takeout?

Request it at takeout.google.com, then unzip the download before opening it here.

Ready to open your export?

Pick a reader and choose your folder. It takes under a minute.
